Research- Low Poly Modelling

When creating the model for this world, we did a bit of research into Low Poly modelling. Basically this type of modelling limits the amount of polygons, or budgeting them so instead of 20,000 you have 350.

These low poly meshes make it easier to UV map an object- less faces making the map a bit clearer.

I found this site helpful in showing the process used. The island scene looks pretty clean and cartoony until the overall textures are added. You can see that the textures add the detail and depth, rather than the mesh. This approach is used mostly in gaming as assets like barrels, doors etc are scenery and passed by without further inspection.

Tutorials 

I liked watching the creation of this gaming asset- the barrel room. It looks very impressive but the individual elements have limited polygons. (Maya Modeling Techniques – Low Poly Assets for games – Part 1, 2016).

Although this is created on Blender I thought the process of the build way useful. That and very relevant to the topic. I really like the inspiration taken from Chinese temples and the use of the architecture here. The implementation of the world floating is well cemented- especially with the appearance of rocks around the base of the ground. ([Speedart] Floating House – Low Poly, 2016).

Another speed model- I watched this closely and found some strange unknown processes were used to create the rocks/ mountains. (Low Poly Art : Fall (TimeLapse), 2016).

Although the above scenes are more simplified looking, I thought they would prove good for referencing when looking at the geometry of the world.
